Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu is one of the most prominent states in India. Meaning Land of the Tamils, Tamil Nadu is one of the largest as well as economically prosperous of all the states in the union. It has a rich and vibrant culture to go along with a long, colorful history. Tamil Nadu has some of the biggest, most beautiful temples in India, and is a bastion of Hinduism.
Largely untouched by the Muslim invaders who sacked the temples of northern India, Tamil Nadu boasts temples built millenniums ago. Temples today still form the fulcrum of society, and cities have been built around temples. Tamil Nadu was also home to a number of empires and kingdoms in antiquity, notably the Cholas, Pandyas, and the Pallavas.
Tamil Nadu has a recorded history going back more than two millennia, and its history is visible today in its many monuments and temples. It also forms the southern tip of the Indian peninsula, and has always fiercely protected its culture and heritage from outside influence. Today Tamil Nadu is the second most industrialized state in the country and the highest urbanization of any state in India.
Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu, is a vibrant city and home to one of the most active film industries in the country. Other cities have their own specialties. Thanjavur is famous for its bronze works while Kanchipuram is known for its silk sarees. Tirunelveli is known for its sweets and Madurai for its temples. Tamil Nadu also has beautiful hill stations in its mountains as well as several wildlife sanctuaries.
